Actor Kamal Hassan has sent out a message to fans, requesting them not to celebrate his birthday, which falls on November 7. He wants the focus to be on the Tamils who are suffering in Sri Lanka. We reproduce the letter below:

Dear members and card holders of our welfare organisation,
I do understand your eagerness to celebrate November 7, which happens to be my birthday.

I beseech you to refrain from such celebrations. An individual’s birthday loses credence or importance when genocide is practiced in our neighbouring island with renewed vigour.

Human civilization is only 10,000 years old. It is not a job completed but a work in progress. Wars around the world are clear indications of this fact.

Language, colour, creed and caste can no more be used as excuses for intolerance.

I am not qualified to offer solutions to the Sri Lankan problem. Nevertheless, I am sensible enough to refrain and restrain you from celebrations when our neighbours are helpless spectators to genocide and mass funerals.

Please redirect your energies and enthusiasm towards human compassion on November 7 instead.

Many are dying for a reason so unbelievably simple. They speak the same language “Tamil” as I do.

If my birthday can be used as a tiny fulcrum to leverage public opinion against this genocide, apart from the honour of gaining your love, I would have one more reason to be proud of my birth.

After Abhishek Bachchan who has lost 14 kgs to look like Mani Ratnam’s on -the-run fugitive in his new film, it’s Mani’s earlier favourite Madhavan who is required to undergo a physical melting-down.

And it’s not for the love of Mani. It’s for Raj Kumar Hirani.

Apparently, Hirani has asked all his three leading men Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and Madhavan to “look like IIT students.”

The interpretation of that instruction has been left to the individual actors. Says a source, “Aamir will lose some of that aggressively muscular look that he has acquired for Ghajini. He needs too look leaner and more athletic, as he did in Dil Chahta Hai. Playing a student at 40-plus won’t be difficult for Aamir. He has done so in Rang De Basanti with great success. Sharman doesn’t need to lose any weight. He looks completely in character. Madhavan needs to look more toned.”

Madhavan who has temporarily shifted base to Mumbai to seriously pursue a career in Hindi cinema, has taken off for two weeks to Ashford in the UK to work on his physique for the role in 3 Idiots.

Speaking from London Maddy says, “My sister lives here in Ashford and there’re very good health clinics here. Whenever I need to change around my metabolism or rework my physique for a role I head for Ashford. And at the moment I’m re-working my physique to look like a student. ”

A time -frame has been set for each of the actors to get into the shape they think right for their characters.

Says Madhavan, “It’s not about looking thinner or younger. All three of us need to look convincing as IIT students. How we choose to do so has been left to us.”

Madhavan returns in two weeks to resume the shooting of Teen Patti which got suspended when the Big B fell ill. He gets emotional. “It was scary how suddenly he took ill. We really don’t care about the delay. All we want is for Amitji to be perfectly recovered again.”

I think he should become like this as student again:))

Mumbai, Nov 6 (IANS) Saif Ali Khan has just been offered a chance by Imtiaz Ali to have his dream come true. The actor, who is passionate about playing the guitar, is all set to play a rock star in the director’s next venture.

‘It’s a film called ‘Rock Star’. I don’t know if I’m equipped to handle it. Rock music is about a lot of attitude. More than just playing with an attitude, it’s a way of thinking. I need to be more true to the music. It’s easy to call any star a rock star. But I think it’s more than your lifestyle. It’s about being able to live your life the way you want,’ Saif told IANS in an interview.

Saif wants to work on the attitude and the guitar before doing ‘Rock Star’. Last week, he played the guitar for a charity concert for Bihar flood victims, but he played so hard that his fingers began to bleed.

‘It has never happened before. My fingers are seriously cut. This is a sign of how seriously I played the guitar. And if I was a seasoned player that wouldn’t happen. So I want to pursue this seriously. As for my performance, I think of the two AC/DC songs ‘Livewire’ and ‘A Whole Lot Of Rosie’. I think I performed one really well, the other not so well. But finally it was fine,’ he said.

Saif now intends to pursue guitar playing on a war scale. He owns two guitars and he intends to carry them with him to his outdoor shoots to play during free hours.

‘I own two beautiful guitars – Fender Stratocaster (which Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton own) and a Gibson Les Paul that was gifted to me recently by the company’s branch in India. I think I’ll start using that. I want my guitar practice to go on side by side with the shooting. I will travel with my guitars.’

About the charity concert last Friday night, Saif said: ‘It went really well. I’d rate my performance 7 out of 10. But I was floored by how well the Pentagram lead guitarist Randolph played, also Tushar who’s done so much music for Yashraj Films. In comparison, I’m still learning.’

Saif is honest in his self-assessment.

‘I seriously need to get out of the amateur player’s zone. I love rock music. It’s very liberating. It’s the same feeling as when we all went dancing as a teenager. The guitar helps me let off steam. I want to play with a group of friends, jamming and enjoying myself without any care in the world. On Friday night, I spoke to the other rock musicians. We’ve decided to play at some smaller centres.’

Girlfriend Kareena Kapoor gave his concert a miss to fulfil her professional commitment to Shah Rukh Khan. Any regrets?

‘Work comes first. We both have to work, yaar. She doesn’t even have to explain. Even my children weren’t there. They’re in Delhi. But there was a huge turnout,’ he said.
