Actor Kamal Hassan has sent out a message to fans, requesting them not to celebrate his birthday, which falls on November 7. He wants the focus to be on the Tamils who are suffering in Sri Lanka. We reproduce the letter below:

Dear members and card holders of our welfare organisation,
I do understand your eagerness to celebrate November 7, which happens to be my birthday.

I beseech you to refrain from such celebrations. An individual’s birthday loses credence or importance when genocide is practiced in our neighbouring island with renewed vigour.

Human civilization is only 10,000 years old. It is not a job completed but a work in progress. Wars around the world are clear indications of this fact.

Language, colour, creed and caste can no more be used as excuses for intolerance.

I am not qualified to offer solutions to the Sri Lankan problem. Nevertheless, I am sensible enough to refrain and restrain you from celebrations when our neighbours are helpless spectators to genocide and mass funerals.

Please redirect your energies and enthusiasm towards human compassion on November 7 instead.

Many are dying for a reason so unbelievably simple. They speak the same language “Tamil” as I do.

If my birthday can be used as a tiny fulcrum to leverage public opinion against this genocide, apart from the honour of gaining your love, I would have one more reason to be proud of my birth.

After Abhishek Bachchan who has lost 14 kgs to look like Mani Ratnam’s on -the-run fugitive in his new film, it’s Mani’s earlier favourite Madhavan who is required to undergo a physical melting-down.

And it’s not for the love of Mani. It’s for Raj Kumar Hirani.

Apparently, Hirani has asked all his three leading men Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and Madhavan to “look like IIT students.”

The interpretation of that instruction has been left to the individual actors. Says a source, “Aamir will lose some of that aggressively muscular look that he has acquired for Ghajini. He needs too look leaner and more athletic, as he did in Dil Chahta Hai. Playing a student at 40-plus won’t be difficult for Aamir. He has done so in Rang De Basanti with great success. Sharman doesn’t need to lose any weight. He looks completely in character. Madhavan needs to look more toned.”

Madhavan who has temporarily shifted base to Mumbai to seriously pursue a career in Hindi cinema, has taken off for two weeks to Ashford in the UK to work on his physique for the role in 3 Idiots.

Speaking from London Maddy says, “My sister lives here in Ashford and there’re very good health clinics here. Whenever I need to change around my metabolism or rework my physique for a role I head for Ashford. And at the moment I’m re-working my physique to look like a student. ”

A time -frame has been set for each of the actors to get into the shape they think right for their characters.

Says Madhavan, “It’s not about looking thinner or younger. All three of us need to look convincing as IIT students. How we choose to do so has been left to us.”

Madhavan returns in two weeks to resume the shooting of Teen Patti which got suspended when the Big B fell ill. He gets emotional. “It was scary how suddenly he took ill. We really don’t care about the delay. All we want is for Amitji to be perfectly recovered again.”

I think he should become like this as student again:))

hennai, Nov 3 (IANS) Tamil thespian Rajnikant Monday ruled out a political career for himself till further notice.

‘I will take a serious look at a possible political future only after the release of my forthcoming film ‘Robot’ (‘Enthiran’ in Tamil) and not before,’ Rajnikant said during an interaction with his fan club mainstays here.

Though no release schedule has been announced so far, the movie is expected to be screened only 2010.

‘Capability, hard work and keen intellect are not enough to make a successful political career. Circumstances play a major part. Further, while nobody can force me into jumping into politics, nobody can prevent me from taking the plunge either,’ the film star said.

‘Like a forced marriage will not do a couple any good, forcing a political career on me when I am not ready will not work either. Though the nation’s present political climate is not conducive for any constructive activity, I, however, do not rule out anything. I am always guided by god and my conscience,’ Rajnikant asserted.

Rajnikant denied that he had ever apologised unconditionally to hooligans in Karnataka.

‘I said something a few months back to pacify people in Karnataka because the situation so demanded. Since Tamil cinema assets are always attacked by those jealous of their reception in that state, I made strong remarks on the assaults in Bangalore. After all, I am human. However, my stand on violence is well known and has never been compromised,’ Rajnikant added.

Rajnikant’s interaction was conducted in a marriage hall in the southern part of the city in the form of a catechism – after fans raised relevant queries.

Ten main functionaries of fan clubs from each district participated strictly by invitation.

The venue was under heavy police and private security guard.

The matinee idol avoided direct comment against some of his fan clubs’ functionaries who started a political party in Coimbatore district a few weeks ago. The party features a picture of the actor in its flag.

* Thalaivar looked very young for his age . He looked like he was in his 30s. Aishwarya Rai looked beautiful too but thalaivar looked AWESOME!

* We waved hands at thalaivar since we were quite far from his place. Thalaivar noticed us waving hands and waved his hands back at us with a charming smile and childlike enthusiasm.

* We waved hands about 10 times and thalaivar waved his hand back each and every time with a smile. We were amazed at his simplicity and down-to-earth attitude.

* When thalaivar went to his caravan for a break, we asked him to take fotos with us. He gently reply saying “Allow panna maataanga paa”. It was unbelievable to see such a great man replying to our requests! We were amazed.

* We were quite disappointed to miss taking a photo with thalaivar. Dont know how thalaivar sens our disappoinment but he sent his assistant to collect papers from us for autographs. After a short while the assistant returned with our papers autographed by thalaivar! This gesture of thalaivar felt like a dream and we were overjoyed.

* One of our friends who is a northie and used to hate thalaivar became a super fan of thalaivar seeing his simplicity. He kept saying “Eppdi da oru manushanaala ivlo simple-aa irukka mudiyum. Naanum thalaivar-oda semma fan aagittaen.”

Rajnikanth Rajinikanth (Kannada,Marathi,Tamil,Telugu) (born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, December 12,1949) is one of the most influential and bankable movie stars in the Indian film industry and is a superstar in Kollywood. He received India’s third highest honour, the Padma Bhushan, for his contribution to Indian cinema in 2000.He was reportedly paid Rs. 25 crores (about USD 6.25 Million) for his latest blockbuster Sivaji, which would make him the highest paid actor in all of India if all the other publicly available compensation figures for other high profile Indian stars are accurate.
Rajinikanth was born to a Maratha family in Karnataka. By birth he admired Kannada Film star Rajkumar. He was the fourth child of his parents, Jijabai and Ramojirao Gaekwad. He was named Shivajirao Gaekwad. Gaekwad is a family name among the Marathas. He lost his mother at the age of five. He did his schooling at the Acharya Paatashala in Bangalore and then at the Vivekananda Balaka Sangha. Rajinikanth struggled a lot during his early age because of poverty. Although his mother-tongue is Marathi,he has not acted in any Marathi movies yet. He began his career doing various jobs in Bangalore. He also attended a theatre for stage plays. Before starting his career in the film industry, he worked as a bus conductor for the Bangalore Transport Service in Bangalore. It was during this time that he nurtured his acting interests by performing in various stage plays.
He married Latha on February 26, 1981, at the age of 31 in Tirumala – Tirupati and they have two children: Aishwariya and Soundarya. Latha currently runs a school named The Ashram.
His elder daughter Aishwariya married actor Dhanush on November 18, 2004 and they have one son, Yathra.
Is he merely a mega star? People unfamiliar with the intricate ways Tamil films, its popularity and its sway over politics would wonder.
Such is his clout over the Tamilians all over the world that many of them are more than happy to sacrifice their life for their hero of reel life! One would, for one’s intellectual boorishness, tend to dismiss it as classic case of hyper-emotions. But that is disdainful to meteoric rise of a bus conductor to super stardom and his unparalleled charisma, unrivalled mannerism, unmatched talents and uncanny knack of stirring the sentiments of millions. He is Shivajirav Gaikwad alias Rajnikant. The living legend of Tamil films.
An insightful film critic since childhood, Rajnikant also learned the finer nuances of cinema from Madras film institute. Though Katha Sangama was his debut film, it was Apoorva Ragaangal, directed by K Balachander, which brought him into limelight. He admits that K Balachander is his mentor as it was under his tutelage that he flourished as an actor.
A veteran of more than 150 films, Rajni, as he is popularly known, may not be a critics’ choice. But he essentially is mass’ choice. He may not match the histrionics of some of his contemporaries. But none of his contemporaries matches his superlative style of acting and action. His flipping a cigarette before he catches it in his mouth would send the masses in hysteric delight. He has an uncanny knack of delivering the dialogues, which are carefully worded to strike straight at souls of masses. Perhaps none in Indian cinema matches his acumen to reach out to the masses through dialogues and actions. No wonder he enjoys a peerless position not only in Indian cinema but in socio-cultural and political realm of Tamil Nadu as well.
Over the years he has outgrown the status of mega star. The phenomenal success of his latest flicks Bhasha, Muthu, Arunachalam, Padayappa, underlines that fact. In Mani Ratnam-directed Dalapati, he gave a fitting reply to those critics who doubted his range of histrionics.
Rajni is one of the few south Indian heroes who successfully crossed over to the North. Andha Kannon , Giraftarr, Chal Baaz , Gangwa etc speak for his success in Bollywood.
Of late, his stock of actions and idiosyncrasies has been a huge success abroad too. That his latest film Padayappa was sold to a Japanese distributor for a mind-boggling sum of 50,000$ is testimony to his popularity in Japan. This amount is termed to be highest amount any Indian film fetched for a commercial release.
He is rare phenomenon in terms of commercial success of films. Even Amitabh Bachchan, the super star of Indian cinema, has given flops. But Rajni’s films never flop in box-office. What is the secret of his enviable success? Critics attribute his success to his mysterious ability (whatever may be the role he enacts on the screen) to identify with the common folk.
In 1999, Rajni completed 25 years in cinema. The Government of Indian in recognition of his outstanding contribution conferred on him Padmabhushan the same year.
Rajinikanth’s first film was in Tamil cinema, where he was initially cast in supporting roles, debuting as a cancer patient in Apoorva Raagangal in 1975.The film was directed by K. Balachander, who is constantly referred to by Rajinikanth as his own guru or mentor. The following year, Rajinikanth acted in his first Kannada film, Katha Sangama, directed by Puttanna Kanagal. Though Rajinikanth refers to director K. Balachander as his “guru” or mentor, it was director S. P. Muthuraman who actually revamped Rajinikanth’s image entirely. Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri (1977), as a villain in the first half and a do-gooder in the second, accepting a woman with a child abandoned by her lover. Around this time Mullum Malarum (1978), directed by J. Mahendran, established Rajinikanth in the Tamil film arena. The success of Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri prompted Muthuraman to make a mushy melodrama with Rajinikanth as a hero sacrificing everything for his siblings in Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai (1979). These films were the turning points in Rajinikanth’s career — he changed from an actor who merely enthralled the audiences, to one who could also make them cry. The acceptance of Rajinikanth sans his mannerisms proved he had at last become a “star” from a “common actor.” His film roles were mainly as a villain during the period 1975 to 1977, frequently with Kamal Haasan as the hero, in movies like Pathinaaru Vayadhinilae , Moondru Mudichu and Avargal (All 1977).
